Exploring the depth of one hue...

If you don't really know yet... i LOVE color.  Over the years, a special interest in monochromatic design has creeped into my heart. :)

Monochromatic consists of one color including the range of tints (white added) or shades (black added) to the original hue.  One can get very specific and use a particular hue like "Cobalt Blue" for instance... or you can say "Purple," using all the purple variations on both sides of the color wheel, red violet or blue violet.

What to do with one color? Below are a few ideas to get you thinking....

1.  Make cookies!!! like I did in the picture above for Valentine's Day.  St. Patricks is coming up... make a variety of shamrocks starting with white frosting and gradually adding more green as you decorate a few cookies at a time.  Sprinkle with monochromatic greens while frosting is wet.. and don't forget the sparkles. :)

2.  Paint your walls.  I can't wait to do this one day when we own a house. Even though this style is a little too modern for me.. it gives you an idea how to incorporate the color.  Medium blue on couch, light blue walls, dark blue frames and even a little blue in the rug.

3.  Buy some flowers!  If you are fortunate to live near a farmer's market or flower shop, you can stop in and have fun... pick out some flowers of the same color, add a few greens or branches, or if you're using a light color, you could add a few cream flowers too.  Or better yet... start this year by planting an arrangement in your garden to use all spring-fall.

4.  Decorate with accessories.  Maybe you have lots of sea glass or shells laying around in a bucket.  Put those in unique/vintage glass jars on a window sill or shelf.  Do you have old books that are of the same color?  Tie a pretty ribbon around them, place em on a coffee table as a centerpiece, add a pretty candlestick and other candles... finishing it off with a framed pic of a loved one (preferably washed out pic or vintage style, to go with the old books.)

5.  Go walk outside!  One of my favorite monochromatic colors is found in the sky and sea.  Either during the day when there is a washed out sea glass look (in the photo to the left), or just after sunset when the sky is lit up with a range of blues.  All yellow and red have been washed out leaving the soft and angelic touch of heaven.

I hope these few ideas brought some inspiration to you.  Let me know or send me a pic of something you've created or decorated with using monochromatic colors. I'd love to see what you've done!

Have a wonderful week!

Wishing for light, love and happiness for you all,
